description | In May 2011, the Puerta Del Sol square was occupied for days, followed by mass demonstrations in many Spanish cities. Images of these events garnered significant international media attention. In the context of the movement 15M and the "indignados", massive protests were sparked by social issues and discontent with institutionalized politics. First, the movement started off further dynamics of politicization, second for fundamental re-interpretations, i.e. changed processes of the construction of reality. Third, the foundation of the "Podemos" party connected to the movement, that party's success at the European elections and the ensuing wave of newly-founded regional parties have brought about a new phase of partial institutionalization. The contribution goes on to discuss the movement's background and development. In addition to literature research, the information is based on more than 50 interviews with activists and experts, as well as participatory observations in the context of assemblies, food dispatches and protest activities since autumn 2014. |
