description | In this article, we present results from a knowledge synthesis aimed at describing 21st-century competencies, sustainability competencies, as well as information and communications technologies (ICT) competencies, which researchers consider essential for workers in today's society. Our study also identifies, among these described competencies, those that appear in elementary science and technology programs in all Canadian provinces. Among other results, we found that the following competencies, determined to be important for the 21st-century worker in the literature, are seldom present in the curricula we looked at: creation and problem solving using ICT, entrepreneurship, management, strategic action, systemic, connective and prospective thinking, and adaptability. Finally, we propose a course of action to promote inclusion of these "new" competencies within elementary science curricula. |
