description The paper is devoted considering challenges in developing the potential of natural resources and production in the northern regions. The functioning and interaction of traditional and current conditions of the North, technogenic industries, and their role in the economy of these territories have been described. The cause-and-effect relationship between the formation of the GRP and extraction of mineral resources by particular subjects (regions) of the Russian Federation has been determined. Challenges that relate to the more adequate estimation of the contribution of the extraction of mineral resources to the economy of the northern regions, which is distorted due to established institutional factors, have been considered. The increased role of rent-forming extraction sectors in the economy of the North and the low diversification opportunities of the economic complex have been noted. Particular attention is given to problems associated with the proposed development of mineral resources of the Arctic zone of Russia.
