description Perfluoroalkanedicarboxylic acids are used as components in synthetic polymers. In this paper, we describe the application of copper(II) sulfide (CuS) particles as matrices for the chemical ionization of perfluoroalkanedicarboxylic acids in surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS). Because Cu(II) is reduced to Cu(I) by laser irradiation, CuS is an effective matrix for chemical ionization when using a nitrogen laser. After preparation of CuS particles by a shaker, mixtures of matrices and analytes were spotted on a laser desorption/ionization (LDI)-plate and measured using a 337-nm nitrogen laser. Using this approach, we succeeded in producing “chelate” copper(I) adducts of perfluoroalkanedicarboxylic acid. Moreover, we found an important relationship between the length of the perfluoroalkane chain and chemical ionization efficiency.
