Three sites, cultivated and abandoned at different times, were studied: a pasture used until 100 years ago, an area temporarily used for slash and burn cultivation between 300–700 years ago, and an Iron Age site where cultivation dated to between 500 bc–1150 ad. Soil samples were taken with a steel tube along transects or on a grid basis and analysed using standard methods. In areas known to have been or supposed to have been former fields cereal pollen was registered and the frequencies of pollen from apophytic plants increased, while in the surrounding forest agricultural indicators were absent or had very low values.
