Van Lier's remarkable outreach efforts to researchers and scholars worldwide through workshops and seminars on scholarly writing for potential authors have vastly increased the visibility of The Modern Language Journal and propelled its reputation to one of the most respected scholarly journals globally. He has worked tirelessly to reach out to underrepresented countries to initiate, build, and support the research agendas of emerging scholars and to assist in developing local, national, and international venues for their work. Among other things, Professor van Lier has left an indelible imprint on the profession and on the hearts and minds of those who had the pleasure and privilege to work with him over the years.
