description | There is an increase in the number of populations suffering from several types of diseases globally. Several reports have documented the significance of fruits and vegetables as a repository of beneficial phytochemicals, naturally occurring antioxidants and biologically active compounds which could protect us against numerous diseases including ulcer, diabetics, cancer and many more. Genetically modified orange has been highlighted as one of the functional foods that could mitigate against all the highlighted diseases. The presence of the following biologically active constituents such as flavones, essential oils, citral, limonoids and carotenes have been documented to be effective against enzymes that cause cancer and inhibit their pathways. Mostly flavones are glycosides that is why they are hydrolyzed in the small intestine and went to colon where their glycoside bond is hydrolyzed and they act as cancer protective agents also. Therefore, this chapter provides a general overview about the recent trends on the nutritional and health benefits of genetically modified oranges. |
