Rumors spread in early July that the San Diego Rowing Club, founded in 1888 on the San Diego Bay, might have a chance of landing the coach of Duke Kahanamoku and Ludy Langer. Langer himself, recently graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, had written a letter to the club on Freeth’s behalf. He and Hawaiian George Cunha of the Healanis were reportedly interested in relocating to San Diego if they could find employment.¹
