ROCK ART OF MAMBALIYA-WAWUKARRIYA CLAN COUNTRY

Thus far in this book we have dealt with rock art in Yanyuwa sea Country belonging to the Rrumburriya, Wuyaliya and Wurdaliya clans. However, the fourth clan, Mambaliya-Wawukarriya, have no island Country. Instead, for the people of this clan their Country extends along the coastal margin and across the vast savannah grasslands known as wumburrwumburr awara (Map 7.1). This savannah Country lies some 13 kilometres inland. The lands between the coast and the savannah grasslands are called narnu-ruluruluwanka and consist of sand flats, saltpans, clay pans and, further to the north, samphire heath.
