Transport poverty and urban mobility

This chapter focuses on the concept of fairness in the city in the context of transport and mobility. It particularly explores the exacerbation of the inequalities in mobility and accessibility as a result of policy and investment favouring certain modes and speeds, all within the context of an ordinary city. This discourse is further used to conceptualise the idea of mobility justice and transport poverty in an urban environment. The chapter uses secondary data to investigate transport poverty in Newcastle upon Tyne, revealing the interrelated processes of social disadvantage, transport disadvantage and transport poverty that are experienced by certain groups in the city, yet also exposing that evidence is thin. The authors argue that there is an urgent need for more evidence of the effects of some of these trends on the long-standing issue of social exclusion and transport's role within it. The problems of transport poverty remain largely unrecognised and unaddressed.
