Zusammenfassung: | The application of fibre-optic technology to the monitoring of volatile organic compounds in soil groundwater samples is described. Sensors and supporting portable instruments suitable for field applications were developed for continuous in-situ measurements. The sensor's operation depends on fluorescence modulation in the presence of volatile organic vapours. Polymer absorption of organic vapours results in a concomitant enhancement of fluorescence in an immobilized fluorophor. In-situ field tests conducted at a jet fuel contamination site showed a detection limit of 10 ppm and a response time of 2.5 minutes with 7.5 per cent signal change. |
