description | We present physical properties of two submillimeter selected gravitationally lensed sources, identified in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey. These submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) have flux densities >100 mJy at 500 Delta *mm, but are not visible in existing optical imaging. We fit light profiles to each component of the lensing systems in Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 Delta *mm data and successfully disentangle the foreground lens from the background source in each case, providing important constraints on the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the background SMG at rest-frame optical-near-infrared wavelengths. The SED fits show that these two SMGs have high dust obscuration with A V ~ 4-5 and star formation rates of ~100 M yr--1. They have low gas fractions and low dynamical masses compared with 850 Delta *mm selected galaxies. |

Letters</jtitle><date>2011-02-10</date><risdate>2011</risdate><volume>728</volume><issue>1</issue><spage>L4</spage><epage>jQuery1323918355911='48'</epage><pages>L4-jQuery1323918355911='48'</pages><issn>2041-8205</issn><eissn>2041-8213</eissn><abstract>We present physical properties of two submillimeter selected gravitationally lensed sources, identified in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey. These submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) have flux densities >100 mJy at 500 Delta *mm, but are not visible in existing optical imaging. We fit light profiles to each component of the lensing systems in Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 Delta *mm data and successfully disentangle the foreground lens from the background source in each case, providing important constraints on the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the background SMG at rest-frame optical-near-infrared wavelengths. The SED fits show that these two SMGs have high dust obscuration with A V ~ 4-5 and star formation rates of ~100 M yr--1. They have low gas fractions and low dynamical masses compared with 850 Delta *mm selected galaxies.</abstract><cop>United States</cop><pub>IOP Publishing</pub><doi>10.1088/2041-8205/728/1/L4</doi><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4193-2539</orcidid><oa>free_for_read</oa></addata></record> |
