Zusammenfassung: | Backgrounds the current terminology used for prehistoric ceramic chronology in New Caledonia. Asserts that the characteristics and chronological boundaries of New Caledonia's varied ceramic traditions require changes. Proposes a synthesis of recent studies, highlighting major typological and geographical shifts in the nearly 3000 years of ceramic history in Southern Melanesia. Raises questions about the appearance, persistence, transformations, definitions and diversifications of ceramic traditions. Proposes a new nomenclature, defining four different ceramic periods for New Caledonia.
