description | Content Partner: Alexander Turnbull Library. Head and shoulders portrait of a woman with ringlets, a lace collar and a black dress. A vase of flowers is to the left in the foreground.
Framed and painted in the same style as John Tasker's posthumous portrait of Mary Ann Holdsworth's husband, Joseph G Holdsworth, dated 1887. The donor believed the work to be one of a pair in done 1887, and possibly of the second Mrs Holdsworth, Elizabeth Mary Smith (1843?-1929). However information from descendants indicate that the likeness is not of the second Mrs Holdsworth. The subject appears to be the first Mrs Holdsworth, Mary Ann nee Battersby (1822?-1859). It is likely to have been done from a photograph.
Quantity: 1 oil(s).
Physical Description: Oil on canvas 530 x 430 mm
Provenance: Both posthumous portraits are likely to have been commissioned by a descendant of Mr Holdsworth and the first Mrs Holdsworth.
Donors are siblings of Elizabeth Anne Holdsworth (1859-1941), nee Buckeridge. She was the wife of William Godfrey Buckeridge, 1849-1943, who was the son of Joseph Godfrey Holdsworth and Mary Ann, nee Battersby.
Processing information: Record updated 21 November 2024 to correct names of donors previously identifed as "Mrs E. G. Buckridge, (or Mr G H Buckeridge)". |
