Over het voorkomen van een bijzondere Sigillaria in Zuid-Limburg

A specimen of a peculiar Sigillaria was found on the grounds of the coal tip of the former coal mine Oranje Nassau III at Hoensbroek (South Limburg, The Netherlands). This specimen could be determined without any doubt as Sigillaria elegans STERNBERG var. semipulvinata (KIDSTON) CROOKALL. This means a first demonstration of its existence within the Lower Westphalian in the Dutch carboniferous coal flora. The specimen found has a very characteristic appearance so that it is difficult to confuse with other Sigillaria species. It is well distinguishable, even from the typical Sigillaria elegans. The new find is compared with a specimen of Sigillaria elegans var. semipulvinata from Yorkshire, from where this variety was first described as an independent species. The original specimen is in the private collection of Mr. PRINS. A latex cast is kept in the collection of the Museum of the Geological Bureau at Heerlen.
