The Biota of the Pennsylvanian (Virgilian) Leavenworth Limestone Midcontinent Region. Part 4: Distribution of Agglutinated and Silicified Foraminifera

Zusammenfassung:A biota of 18 recognizable agglutinated and silicified foraminifers is reported and described from the Upper Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian-Virgilian) Leavenworth Limestone of the midcontinent region. The 18 species are placed under 10 genera of agglutinated forms and 3 genera of originally calcareous forms. The assemblage consists of: Hyperammina glabra Cushman & Waters, 1927; H. elegantissima Plummer, 1945; H. sp. aff. H. clavacoidea Plummer, 1945; Psammosphaera gracilis Ireland, 1939; Saccammina aspera Stewart & Priddy, 1941; Thurammina sp. cf. T. elliptica? Moreman, 1930; T. diforamens Ireland, 1956; T. papillata Brady, 1879; Minammodytes polyvertus (Ireland, 1956); Ammovertella inclusa (Cushman & Waters, 1930); Reophax? sp.; Ammobaculites stenomecus Cushman & Waters, 1928; "Textularia eximia Eichwald, 1860" sensu Ireland, 1956; Bigenerina virgilensis Ireland, 1956; B. elongata Ireland, 1956; Apterrinella sp. cf. A. grahamensis (Harlton, 1928); Hemigordius sp. cf. H. harltoni Cushman & Waters, 1928; and Climacammina sp. The agglutinated and silicified foraminifers were derived from the coarse fraction of insoluble formic acid residues. Of the agglutinated foraminifers, representative species of 5 genera (Hyperammina, Minammodytes, Ammovertella, Textularia, and Bigenerina) are present in relative abundance and distributed throughout the length of the Leavenworth outcrop belt in all recognized Leavenworth rock facies. Most of the Leavenworth agglutinated foraminifers occur within the described geologic ranges noted by previous workers, with the exception of Saccammina aspera and Thurammina papillata, forms more commonly found in the Silurian but herein extended into the Upper Pennsylvanian. Additions have been made to the overall geographic range of all Leavenworth species. No new taxa are described.
