description It is well known that the life of an extruded dielectric cable can deteriorate more rapidly under AC voltage stress when moisture is present in the insulation. There are many mechanisms that may subject the insulation system of a cable to moisture during the cable's life. This paper reviews a novel design that is radially and longitudinally water blocked a new test method for radial water tightness and the most typical test results. The basic design concept includes a filled conductor, extruded polymeric insulation system, longitudinal moisture barrier, a combination metallic shield/radial moisture barrier and an overall jacket.
