Experimental study of an inverse wire array z-pinch operating as a current switch
Summary form only given. We will present experiments on the MAGPIE facility (1.5 MA, 250 ns) in which an inverse wire array (with the wires acting as a return current cage placed around a central current conductor) operated as a fast current switch. This allowed to significantly reduce the rise-time of the current pulse (<; 100 ns) delivered to a separate, standard imploding wire array z-pinch load. Experimental studies of the operation of this arrangement as a current switch will be discussed. In particular it was found that this arrangement generates a short current pre-pulse (~5 kA, <;15 ns) through the imploding array, followed by a ~40 ns interval with zero current, before the main fast rising current pulse is switched into the array. This led to a significant change in the implosion dynamics, suppressing the ablation phase, introducing a 0-D-like implosion and reducing the level of trailing mass.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0730-9244</identifier><identifier>ISBN: 9781424454747</identifier><identifier>ISBN: 1424454743</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 2576-7208</identifier><identifier>EISBN: 9781424454754</identifier><identifier>EISBN: 1424454751</identifier><identifier>EISBN: 142445476X</identifier><identifier>EISBN: 9781424454761</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1109/PLASMA.2010.5534238</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>IEEE</publisher><subject>Conductors ; Educational institutions ; Laboratories ; Pulse generation ; Switches ; US Department of Energy ; Wire</subject><ispartof>2010 Abstracts IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science, 2010, p.1-1</ispartof><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/5534238$$EHTML$$P50$$Gieee$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>309,310,780,784,789,790,2058,27925,54920</link.rule.ids><linktorsrc>$$Uhttps://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/5534238$$EView_record_in_IEEE$$FView_record_in_$$GIEEE</linktorsrc></links><search><creatorcontrib>Harvey-Thomson, A</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Lebedev, S V</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Hall, G N</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Bland, S N</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Burdiak, G</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chittenden, J P</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>de Grouchy, P</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Suzuki-Vidal, F A</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Swadling, G</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Khoory, E</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Pickworth, L</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Skidmore, J</creatorcontrib><title>Experimental study of an inverse wire array z-pinch operating as a current switch</title><title>2010 Abstracts IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science</title><addtitle>PLASMA</addtitle><description>Summary form only given.
