description | The implementation of ATM and Intelligent Network (IN) in communications networks is coming. ATM, the technology for transmitting and switching multimedia information over broadband network, requires a highly functional system for controlling highspeed communications services. IN, the technology for providing advanced network services, requires highspeed transmission of service control signals. Although both technologies have evolved independently, it is now time for their integration to create flexible enterprise and public networks for high-speed wide-area communications. By applying both ATM and IN technologies to Virtual Private Network (VPN) concept, a flexible Broadband Virtual Private Network (BVPN) architecture can be created which serves the enterprise WAN needs as well as migrates BISDN into the public network. We show that ATM shared buffer memory switch is very effective for BVPN traffic shaping. Then, software architecture is proposed to adapt to the BVPN services. Finally, there is a description of the broadband intelligent network testbed system based on Distributed processing Environment (DPE). |
