description This paper aims to design a switching scanning beam antenna operating at 2.45 GHz based on the principles of cylindrical reflector antennas integrated with the feature of FSS in the second part of its spectral response (Habib et al., 2008). An active cylindrical frequency selective surface (ACFSS) is proposed to benefit the interesting feature of FSS textures as an EM shutter to control the electromagnetic wave propagation produced by an omni-directional radiation pattern antenna placed at the cylinder center. This cylindrical FSS is designed such that the half part of it emulates a blocking surface and the other part introduces a transparent aperture to let electromagnetic wave passing through the cylinder. The underlying principle and design procedure of the proposed antenna are described in the following sections, and the measurement results are presented and discussed as well. All the simulation carried out in this paper has been performed by CST Microwave Studio simulator package.
