description | Fuelled by the phenomenal growth of vehicular and air traffic, motorways and airports are considered to be among the most dynamic environments known. Providing adequate and reliable communication facilities to motorway and airport users is extremely challenging due to the high variability of the environments in which they operate. Moreover, maintaining quality of service (QoS) for all traffic classes (voice, video and data) poses another problem due to their different delay characteristics. To overcome the challenges, in this paper we introduce the design of a medium access control (MAC) protocol namely Pico Cellular MAC (PC-MAC) for motorway and airport environments. For a motorway scenario, based on the analysis of real vehicular motorway traffic we develop our own vehicular simulator to study real-time vehicular traffic scenarios. For The INtelligent Airport (TINA) scenario, we study the airport layout in a cellular form and estimate the bandwidth required for multimedia users using our developed airport simulator. |
