description Currently most energy-constrained wireless sensor networks are designed with the object of minimizing the communication power at the cost of more computation because the energy consumption of traditional sensor nodes is known to be dominated by the communication functionalities. However, this may not be true in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs). Sometimes centralized image compression at the source nodes may limit the lifetime of the networks. Inspired by the in-network processing concept, this paper proposes a novel collaborative LT based image compression scheme for multi-hop clustered WMSNs. It overcomes the computation and energy limitation of individual nodes by sharing the processing of tasks. Performance evaluation shows that it greatly reduces the hardware cost of individual node and prolongs the lifetime of the wireless sensor network in the case of the sensor nodes deployed densely.
