description This paper presents the design-oriented analysis of the combined voltage-resonant inverter for electronic ballasts of fluorescent lamps. In this inverter, the voltage-resonant active filter and inverter are combined, and a switch of the active filter is used simultaneously as that of the inverter. The operation mechanism and the relationship between the circuit parameters and the performance characteristics are discussed to determine the appropriate circuit parameters. As a result, the high power factor, low input current distortion factor, low crest factor of the output voltage, low voltage stresses on the main switch and smoothing capacitor, and high power efficiency can be realized by using the suitable circuit parameters. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the input current harmonic distortion characteristics of the inverter satisfy Japan MITI guideline Limit C and IEC1000-3-2 Class C.< >
