description All the previous methods for detecting all-zero discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient blocks (AZB) prior to DCT and quantization are SAD-based methods. In this paper, two improved AZB early detection methods for SSD-based video coding are proposed. Based on the analysis of DCT coefficient distribution and Paseval energy conservation theorem, we derive an efficient condition under which each quantized coefficient becomes zero. Experiment results show that the energy conservation method achieves up to 32% higher detection ratio without degrading video quality and DCT distribution method up to 47% higher than the existing methodologies
