Zusammenfassung: | An online learning module on gene regulation was designed and implemented in BIOL 295F - Introductory Quantitative Cellular Biology, a new undergraduate course for engineering students at Purdue University. The overarching design goal was to create an online module to help students develop a dynamic mental model of the cause and effect relationship between gene expression and protein function using circadian rhythms as an example. By taking advantage of advances in technology, an online module was developed that provides both visual representations that help engineering students best learn as well as interactive components that engage students in higher-level critical thinking. This paper overviewed the design, implementation, and assessment of the online learning module. Student learning gains were assessed using pre-post quiz questions focused on concepts presented in the online learning module. In addition, students' actual use of the tool and their perceptions of the interactive online learning modules versus other modes of instruction were evaluated |
