description The expected number of retransmissions is a very important parameter to evaluate the multicast performance. It is often used to estimate other performance parameters such as bandwidth consumption and delay. A simple and efficient evaluation to these parameters is helpful for design of multicast protocols. In this work, we will derive a good analytical evaluation to the number of retransmissions. We also obtain the total bandwidth consumption for hierarchical reliable multicast where some special receivers or routers are assigned for retransmission handling of each domain. The optimal partitioning of the tree also depends on topology of networks for each subgroup. The effects of topology on optimal placements are analyzed using bandwidth consumption as criteria for hierarchical reliable multicast.
