description | A Wireless Ad Hoc network (WANET ) does not use any base stations. It is an infrastructureless, multi‐hop network. WANET is a collection of two or more devices equipped with wireless communications and networking capability. This supports anytime and anywhere computing, being self‐organizing and adaptive. The network allows spontaneous formation and deformation of mobile networks. Each mobile node acts as a router and supports peer‐to‐peer and remote communications. This reduces administrative costs and deployment. The spontaneous erection of networks to be connected as and when required enables development of various novel applications based on ad hoc networks. However, the same ad hoc network presents several new challenges. Different research proposals have been put forward to resolve these challenges. This chapter provides a survey of different types of networks, its basic concepts, features, applications, and research trends of wireless ad hoc network. Even though various surveys are already available, rapid developments in recent years call for an updated account on this topic. |
