description | Cognitive behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP) is a cognitive behavioral psychotherapy developed for the treatment of chronic depression and shown to be effective in controlled studies. CBASP suggests that the thought structure of an individual with chronic depression is stuck in Piaget's cognitive developmental stages of preoperational thinking. It has been argued that there are some similarities between chronically depressed individuals and pre-operational children in terms of their thinking. The goal of treatment is to elevate preoperational thinking to more advanced cognitive stages and to help individuals develop coping patterns, skills in interpersonal relationships, and effective communication that will help them understand the consequences of their behavior. Since the theory was specifically developed for chronic depression, most studies have been conducted in this field, but there are opinions that the general principles of CBASP can be applied to other psychological disorders other than chronic depression by making some changes to the model. CBASP's basic techniques of situation and interpersonal discriminant analysis can be adapted to the treatment of other psychological problems, such as bipolar depression, childhood depression, personality disorders, marital conflict, and chronic depression. This study aims to review the research on the effect of CBASP on chronic depression and other nondepressive psychopathologies. EXTENDED ENGLISH ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION The Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) is a third-wave cognitive behavioral therapy approach developed by American psychologist James P. McCullough, Jr. specifically for the treatment of chronic depression (McCullough, 2003; Schoepf & Neudeck, 2011). It mainly aims to help individuals develop coping patterns, improve their skills in interpersonal relationships, and communicate effectively in a way that helps them understand the consequences of their behavior (Klein et al., 2004). CBASP suggests that the thinking structure of the chronically depressed individual is restricted in Piaget's pre-operational stage of cognitive development (McCullough, 2003), which is because the challenging environmental conditions experienced in the early developmental period disrupt or delay the normal emotional-cognitive development of the individual. Since the theory was developed specifically for chronic depression, most studies have been carried out in this field, but there are opinions that the general principles of CBASP can be employed for psychological disorders other than chronic depression by making some changes to the model. This article aims to review the research on the effect of CBASP on chronic depression and other non-depressive psychopathologies. METHOD CBASP studies carried out between 2003 and 2022 in EBSCO, Web of Science, and APA PsycTherapy databases were analyzed. Books on CBASP were also reviewed. The studies were mostly about chronic depression. The sources to address CBASP's theory of chronic depression were studies with chronically depressed individuals. Since CBASP was developed specifically for chronic depression, studies have focused on this area. However, there were also comments on the relationship of CBASP with other psychopathologies. Especially in the book chapters, it was found that CBASP was applied and reported specifically for psychopathologies other than depression. We also found articles exploring the efficacy of CBASP in patients with both major depression and other comorbidities. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The common point in these studies was to confirm CBASP's theory. CBASP, with its "situation analysis" technique, evaluates the thoughts and behaviors that the individual has problems with, shows that each behavior has certain consequences, and helps the person to find out why he/she cannot achieve the result he/she wants to achieve. Through numerous studies and meta-analyses, this focus as a therapy method and the techniques and treatment package developed based on it have been shown to be effective in chronically depressed patients. CBASP addresses the patterns that are valid in the patient's whole life through the therapistclient relationship. Regardless of the diagnosis, this is a situation that is appropriate for use in all psychopathologies. In fact, when the studies conducted were reviewed, results supporting this situation were found. Moreover, the findings that problem-solving skills improved in patients who underwent CBASP are thought to be effective for those who experience both psychological problems and more everyday problems.
