description Chronic exposure to high concentrations of arsenic in drinking water poses severe health problems. Remedy for arsenic poisoning remains elusive. Mangiferin a C-glucosylxanthone was investigated for its ability to protect against arsenic induced cytotoxicity in IEC-6 cell lines. The UV spectral data revealed the chemical interactions between Mangiferin and As (III) in a 4:1 molar ratio. MTT assays confirmed the efficacy of MGN supplementation in attenuating arsenic induced cytotoxicity. Mangiferin could effectively attenuate the arsenite-induced cytotoxicity, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), MMP, lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and cell cycle. Application of mangiferin along with NaAs[O.sub.2] in IEC-6 cells resulted in the modulation of arsenite-induced activities of antioxidant enzymes like SOD and Catalase to near normal levels. FTIR, HPLC and florescence studies indicated possible chelation of mangiferin with arsenite.
