UMBUZEIRO DOS DEFUNTOS: A MILESTONE IN HISTORY OF SAO LOURENCO DO PIAUI/ UMBUZEIRO DOS DEFUNTOS: UM MARCO NA HISTORIA DE SAO LOURENCO DO PIAUI

This article refers to research that is done by the umbuzeiro dos defuntos, landmark of the municipality of Sao Lourenco do Piaui. It is known by the oral history that, next to a leafy umbuzeiro were buried many Indians who refused to be slaves on the farms of southeastern Piaui State. On formulates the hypothesis that there were buried nearly five hundred Indians killed by the Portuguese in the latter half of the seventeenth century, as reported by Priest Martin de Nantes. Interviews were conducted with elderly people in the city of Sao Lourenco to rescue fragments of oral tradition about umbuzeiro dos defuntos and the origin of the present city of Sao Lourenco. Information did not match the catastrophe narrated by Franciscan missionary however indicate that there lie the bodies of many dead Indians in a state of utter despair. It is said that the high stress experienced at the time of his murder is preserved and manifested in hauntings that translate regionally as aleivosias. It is hoped that with the opening of polls and excavations, meet organic remains and material culture to corroborate the hypothesis that on formulates in the current stage of research. Sabe-se pela historia oral que, proximo a um frondoso umbuzeiro, foram enterrados muitos indios que nao aceitaram ser escravos nas fazendas da regiao Sudeste do Piaui. Formula-se a hipotese de que ali foram sepultados quase quinhentos indios assassinados pelos portugueses na segunda metade do seculo XVII, conforme relato do padre Martinho de Nantes. Entrevistaram-se pessoas idosas da cidade de Sao Lourenco para resgatar fragmentos da tradicao oral a respeito do umbuzeiro dos defuntos e da origem da atual cidade de Sao Lourenco. Nao se encontraram informacoes da hecatombe narrada pelo missionario franciscano, porem, indicativos de que ali jazem os corpos de muitos indios mortos em situacao de extremo desespero. Diz-se que o alto stress vivido no instante de seu assassinato se conserva e se manifesta em assombracoes que se traduzem, regionalmente, como aleivosias. Espera-se que, com a abertura de sondagens e escavacoes, encontrem-se restos organicos e da cultura material que corroborem a hipotese que se formula no estagio atual da pesquisa.
