description Mineral extraction generates direct and indirect jobs, but the resulting degradation can attract other economic arrangements such as cattle ranching and charcoal production. In the Amazonas State, Brazil, it has been much debate about the viability of underground extraction of potassium, in the form of silvinite, for agricultural use. This mineral is found in six municipalities, including Nova Olinda do Norte, and it is considered the largest mineral deposit of South America with an extraction capacity of 1 billion tons. Taking into account that this activity causes environmental impacts, particularly on water sources and soil, we proceeded to conduct a literature review and a visit to the site where, likely, the extraction will start, in order to obtain an overview of the socio-environmental conditions on the surrounding communities and, from other experiences of mining in the world, to identify potential impacts of this activity on the environment, as well as some reusing methods of mining residues. Keywords: Silvinite, environmental economy, mineral resources, Nova Olinda do Norte, Amazonia. Palabras claves: Silvinita, economia ambiental, recursos minerales, Nova Olinda do Norte, Amazonia.
