Zusammenfassung:The present study examines the development of combined heat and power generation (CHP) over recent years in great detail and provides a prospect of future developments until the year 2030. In addition to investigating modifications regarding number, installed capacity and generation of CHP plants, in particular their economic viability and their promotion as well as savings of primary energy and of CO2 – achieved by using cogeneration – were assessed. Furthermore, the future role of cogeneration in an energy system with high shares of renewable energies has been analysed and various options for promoting cogeneration were studied respectively evaluated. Finally, the paper outlines recommendations for action to enhance the future development and the promotion of co-generation. The study was compiled by Fraunhofer IFAM, Öko-Institut e.V., BHKW-Consult, Stiftung Umweltenergierecht and Prognos AG in 2017.
