Recurent and simple selection of wheat hybrids partially resistant to Fusarium culmorum

description | The aim of research was conducted to demonstrate the role of recurrent and simple selections in wheat hybrids in order to receive advanced resistance-tolerance to Fusarium culmorum. Five Slovak cultivars – Rada, Sana, Solida Torysa and Vanda were crossed with two cultivars, resistant – Sumai-3 and moderately resistant – Stoa. Parents and their progenies were evaluated in field conditions for resistance against the spread of scab within a spike. A central floret was inoculated by injecting a drop of Fusarium culmorum conidial suspension at the time of anthesis. Tolerance to the infection was expressed as a reduction from the non-inoculated control in the grain number per spike and grain weight per spike. Disease progress, reduction of grain number per spike and reduction of grain weight per spike was significantly lower in hybrids Rada/Sumai-3 and Torysa/Sumai-3 than in other hybrids. Significant lowest reduction of grain number per spike in populations with simple selection in comparison with populations after recurrent selection was recorded. Reduction of grain weight per spike was in male parents and in investigated hybrids significantly lower than in female parents. |
