Effects of age and repeatedly mating on litter size in Golden hamsters

In Experiment 1, golden hamsters that were mated repeatedly 6 times (Trial 1) or 4 times (Trial 2) by 43 weeks of age were analyzed with respect to litter size, body weight of offspring and sex ratio. Litter size at parturition declined at the last parity at 43 weeks of age in both trials and repeat...

description In Experiment 1, golden hamsters that were mated repeatedly 6 times (Trial 1) or 4 times (Trial 2) by 43 weeks of age were analyzed with respect to litter size, body weight of offspring and sex ratio. Litter size at parturition declined at the last parity at 43 weeks of age in both trials and repeated mating seemed to augment the effect of age on the litter size. There were no appreciable changes in body weight of offspring and sex ration in relation to the maternal age. In Experiment 2, females were randomly assigned to 14, 24, 34 and 43 week-groups and ova were collected to examine fertilization. Although the number of ova recovered did not differ statistically among groups, percentages of normal embryos decreased significantly with advancing maternal age. It is concluded that golden hamsters begin to show a reduced ability to reproduce at a much earlier age when mated repeatedly, probably due to an increased proportion of abnormal ova
