(I): (where R', R2 and R6 are H, CF3 alkyl, aralkyl or aryl opt. substd. by alkyl, alkoxy, halo, NO2 or Cf3 or R'+R2 are -CH2-(CH2)n-CH2-; n is 1, 2 or 3; R7 is H, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl opt. substd. by alkyl, alkoxy, halo, NO2 or CF3; when R' + R2 is alkylene, the ring so formed may be substd. by R7; X is CN, CONR3R4, CSNR3R4 or CO2R5; R3, R4 and R5 are H, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl opt. substd. by alkyl, alkoxy, halo, NO2 or CF3; m is 1, 2 or 3 provided when R' and R2 is an alkylene chain n may be equal to m) are prepd. by known methods for introducing X or converting X = CO2R into X = CONR3R4, CSNR3R4 or CN. Thus 2-phenyl-5,6,7,8-tetra hydroquinoline thiocarboxamide is prepd. by forming the free acid from 2-phenyl-5,6,7,8 tetrahydroquinoline PhLi and CO2, converting this to the ester then the amide and heating this with P2S5. The nitrile is also formed.
