The compound has a phosphate binding capacity of 260-300 mg. PO 4 /g of dry substance and prevents phosphate containing concretions from further growth or causes them to break down or be excreted. The composition may be administered as a powder, tablets or a gel. Example 2 relates to a powder composition comprising 40% of the sulphate dodecahydrate, 32.9% sorbitol, 27% sacchorose and 0.1% aroma. Example 3 relates to tablets comprising 400 parts of the sulphate dodecahydrate, 100 parts lactose, 85 parts starch, 10 parts polyvinylpyrrolidone and 5 parts magnesium stearate. Example 4 relates to a gel comprising 10% of the sulphate dodecahydrate, 1.45% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, 1.4% glycerol, 0.2 ethyl p-hydroxy benzoate, 0.01% sodium saccharine and balance demineralised water.
