As the rotating pin travels along the weld joint, the plasticized metal of the work pieces is extruded to the back face of the pin while undergoing a mechanical stirring and forging from action imparted by the at least one boss on the surface of the pin, and while confined from above by the pressure exerted on the metal by a shoulder on the stir weld tool. L'outil de soudage sous agitation selon l'invention est utilisé pour souder ensemble deux pièces métalliques par chauffage avec friction, plastification, mélange et forgeage du métal plastifié, de manière à réaliser une construction soudée uniforme. Le soudage sous agitation s'effectue en entraînant en rotation l'outil de soudage au moyen d'une tige ayant au moins une bosse sur sa surface en vue de créer la friction mécanique dans le métal en contact avec la tige tournant rapidement. Lorsque la tige en rotation se déplace le long du joint soudé, le métal plastifié des pièces est extrudé vers la face arrière de la tige, tout en étant soumis à une agitation mécanique et à un forgeage sous l'effet d'au moins une bosse sur la surface de la tige, et tout en étant confiné, à partir d'en haut, par la pression exercée sur le métal par un épaulement sur l'outil de soudage.
