Alternatively, the permanent magnet may be replaced with an electrically non-conductive shim of substantially equal dimension such that the energy output is substantially reduced and the charge/discharge interval substantially increased to thereby allow use of the same basic modularly constructed coil assembly for totally different ignition strategies. La bobine primaire est bobinée autour d'un noyau central comprenant un aimant permanent en matériau magnétique qui n'est pas totalement dense. L'aimant est placé entre une extrémité du noyau central et une extrémité d'un noyau de fer en forme de C entourant les bobines primaire et secondaire. Cet aimant assure l'élimination de tout espace vide entre le noyau de fer en forme de C et le noyau central. Une autre solution consiste à remplacer l'aimant permanent par une cale non électroconductrice de dimensions similaires, de telle sorte que la sortie d'énergie diminue sensiblement et que l'intervalle charge/décharge augmente sensiblement. Ceci permet d'utiliser le même montage de bobine modulaire de base pour des modes d'allumage totalement différents.
