The hot gases comprised substantially of COu and HuO are substantially transformed into CO and Hu, and then cooled and finally counter current supplied and at 800`C towards the charge (10) which progresses in the conduit to be introduced into the crucible (8). When the gases at 800`C go through the charge (10), they transfer their heat to the charge. If the charge is composed of metal oxides, a substantial prereduction may be achieved in the conduit (7). By traversing the charge (10) the hot gases are cooled and released at temperatures higher than 100`C, preferably at about 150`C, to avoid water condensation in the charge.
