L'unité de rétroéclairage comprend un écran divisé en un réseau de segments et une plaque transparente pour diriger des rayons lumineux à travers l'écran. Chaque segment du réseau de segments peut fonctionner entre un mode permettant la traversée des rayons lumineux, les rayons lumineux pouvant passer à travers la plaque transparente et l'écran, et un mode permettant de bloquer le passage des rayons lumineux, le passage des rayons lumineux à travers l'écran étant bloqué.
