L'invention concerne des techniques permettant de surveiller la connectivité et la latence de liaisons de réseau dans des réseaux virtuels. Par exemple, un agent ping injecte des premiers paquets ping dans un trafic réseau pour le compte d'hôtes dans le réseau virtuel. L'agent ping surveille des paquets entrants afin d'identifier des premiers paquets de réponse ping, constituant des paquets en réponse aux premiers paquets ping, parmi les paquets entrants. Une règle de répondeur ping comprise dans des règles de filtre de paquet entrant pour un port dans un commutateur virtuel intercepte des seconds paquets ping dans le trafic de réseau. La règle de répondeur ping convertit les seconds paquets ping en seconds paquets de réponse ping et injecte les seconds paquets de réponse ping dans des règles de filtre de paquet sortant devant être transférées à des sources en provenance desquelles les seconds paquets ping sont reçus.
