A liquid treatment cartridge includes a housing and a quantity of dimensionally unstable matter (19) forming at least one liquid treatment medium, encapsulated in an interior space (20) of the housing. The housing includes a first housing component (21) and a second housing component (22), distinct from the first housing component (21). The first housing component (21) includes a liquid-impervious side wall section (27), closed on itself about an axis (23), and a liquid-impervious base wall section (28) at an axial end of the housing. The base wall section (28) includes an indentation (30) into the interior space (20). The indentation (30) is provided with at least one liquid-pervious window for retaining the encapsulated matter (19). The interior space (20) includes a portion (34) that surrounds the indentation (30) and is accessible to the encapsulated matter (19). The second housing component (22) is joined to the first housing component (21) at an axial position on an opposite side of an interior end of the indentation (30) to the axial end of the housing at which the base wall section (28) is located. The encapsulated matter (19) extends to a level enabling it to contact at least part of the liquid-pervious window in an orientation of the liquid treatment cartridge in which the second housing component (22) is situated at a lower level than the base wall section (28).
