Le procédé comprend une réaction d'ouverture de cycle monotope d'anhydride maléique en monométhylmaléate et une isomérisation en monométhylfumarate correspondant, en présence d'un acide de Lewis. Enfin, le monométhylfumarate est transformé en diméthylfumarate par une réaction d'estérification catalysée par un acide.
