La présente invention a trait à un procédé pour la formation d'un complexe à base d'iridium ou de rhodium tris-cyclométallé comprenant la réaction en présence d'un solvant: a) d'un complexe bis-cyclométallé comportant un métal Ir (III) ou Rh (III), deux ligands bidentés, deux ligands monodentés et un contre-ion, et b) d'un composé hétérocyclique apte à la formation d'un complexe organométallique cyclométallé.
