description Disclosed is a method and apparatus for guidance of a magnetic head to a predetermined reference position generally used to recalibrate head to media orientation. An electro-magnetic or photosensitive device is provided to accurately and repeatably position a magnetic head carriage to a reference point in order to calibrate the head gap location with respect to parallel tracks across the width of the media. A coarse and fine adjustment method is used to improve the accuracy of establishing the head at the reference position.
