A compression spring is generally centrally disposed within the electromagnetic compartment of the armature. One end of the spring is secured to the armature and the other end of the spring is secured to the regulator housing. The armature is movable rotatably relative to the regulator, the spring resisting the rotational movement of the armature. The armature is movable axially relative to the regulator, the spring resisting the axial movement of the armature. A washer is positioned within the housing and about the armature. A flux path is generated through the washer, the housing, and the armature as the electrical current is varied. The rotational position of the armature relative to the washer is varied in response to the change in the current.
