Zusammenfassung:	Overbased alkaline earth metal hydrocarbyl sulfonates are made by injecting carbon dioxide into a mixture of hydrocarbon sulfonic acid, alkaline earth metal base and lower alkanol. Solids are removed using a centrifuge or filter forming a cake of such solids and hydrocarbyl sulfonic acid values. The cake is mixed with an aqueous acid which forms a water-soluble alkaline earth metal salt. The resulting organic phase is separated and hydrocarbyl sulfonic acid is recovered from it.
