description | 1,199,583. Sulphonamide-urea-formaldehyde textile-treating compositions. PENNSALT CHEMICALS CORP. 19 Oct., 1967 [31 Oct., 1966], No. 47669/67. Heading C3R. [Also in Division D1] A creaseproofing agent is prepared by reaction of 1 mole of a C 1-4 alkane sulphonamide and 0À2-2 moles of urea and/or biuret with 3- 10 moles of formaldehyde, the product containing 10-50 wt. per cent of free formaldehyde, based on the total weight of reactants. Suitable sulphonamides are methane, ethane, propane, isopropane, n-butane and isobutane sulphonamides; the formaldehyde may be supplied as e.g. a 37% aqueous solution or a 55% methanol solution. The reaction may be carried out at pH 8-9 at 50-100 C. for 2-12 hrs. in aqueous solution, leading preferably to a 30-50 wt. per cent solids product concentration; other suitable reaction solvents include methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, dimethyl sulphoxide, dioxan, ethers, glycols, and glycol ethers. The product is used in textile treating compositions containing 7-15% product solids at pH 3-5 and containing conventional catalysts (list) and optionally optical brighteners, softeners, hand builders, water and oil repellants and biocides and biostats. In Examples, 1 mole each of urea and methane sulphonamide are condensed with 4-6 moles of formaldehyde added in one or two steps, in aqueous solution. |
