description 1146611 Niobium tin layer IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 23 Aug 1966 [17 Sept 1965] 39724/65 Addition to 1021548 Headings H1A and A4D A method of manufacturing an article having a continuous layer of Nb 3 Sn comprises the steps of electro-phoretically depositing a layer of Sn powder on to a layer of Nb (e.g. a Nb wire or tape), and submitting the layers of Sn and Nb to a single heat-treatment at a temperature between 950 and 1600‹C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. in an inert gas or in a vacuum, so as to cause at least some of the Sn to react with at least some of the Nb to form a continuous layer of Nb 3 Sn. In an example, a length of Nb tape was coated by electro-phoresis with a layer of Sn powder from a suspension of tin powder in a stirred liquid mixture containing 50/50 volume per cent nitromethane/isopropyl alcohol solution, 1À1 grams zein per litre, 0À036 grams Al(NO 3 ) 3 per litre and 36 grams of Sn powder per litre. A platinized Ti anode was used at a current density of more than 2 milliamps per sq. cm. on the Nb tape. The resulting composite was heated in vacuo for 20 minutes at 975‹C.
