Alkaline electric cells having an outer can constituting a cathode contact and an end cap constituting an anode contact both formed of conductive sheet material and being insulated from each other by a seal have the end cap provided with a flange projecting radially outwards and defining, together with the main part of the cap, an air space open to the atmosphere and remote from the anode contact face in which space migrating electrolyte can solidify. In the embodiment shown, the stainless steel flange 6 is welded to the outer disc 4 of the end cap. Alternatively, the flange may be integral with disc 4.
